Erin takes a deep interest in theatricals, especially music, he has opened his own agency and already has a couple of clients, Cassie is one a young singer also his lover.  However this is merely a front for the real passion of his life, a quite different existence one completely  unknown and very private, an Occult world in which he is master.  Gilda, 19 has recently finished a drama course, her boy friend George is also interested in theatricals, George has ambitions to be a singer.  There are very few opportunities nor is there much interest really where they live.

Both get parts in a musical, it seems to be very lucky for both, Cassie Erin’s girl friend is the lead.  Erin sends a message via George to Gilda, at the end of the show.  Gilda has little interests and is quite ignorant to anything outside the ordinary.  She visits Erin who signs her up, a very powerful spell by Erin over Gilda is made, all unknown to anyone else.  She is caste in different shows always far from her home and George, they drift apart.  Erin shows his other side, she is forced to leave him but not before he curses her and confirms his possession of her.  He also makes a date with her tohave a few drinks and talk things over, little does she know that this event will take place about twenty years later.  In the meantime she travels overseas. Has several love affairs, returns home and marries.  She has 4 children but the marriage is not happy and she has to take medication fo rit lacks any emotional warmth.  Also her husband bashes her, he can be extremely nasty and cruel.  The marriage flounders, it has serious affects on the emotional Gilda who needs company and love, she is denied both from husband and children.  Suddenly out of the blue, Erin again appears, then the date made 20 years ago of a few drinks and talking things over takes place.  He speaks of  experiments, Gilda has no idea what he is talking about, however she has a rather silly affair and her marriage ends.  Erin has asked her to visit him which she eventually does, he shows her clearly his Occult powers which are considerable.  Gilda s now poor and alone, apart from her visits though Erin does not make things comfortable, he appears to know her moves but apart from visits to him he keeps his distance.

So the strange experiments commence, they display completely uncanny mysteries to which there is no answer at all.  Control over people and almost anything it seems, yet her life is not happy and very isolated.  She cannot talk to anyone about these strange things either.  Things all tangible and very real appear, doors, windows brick walls are nothing, its strange control over people is truly amazing.  It seems capable of controlling almost anything.  Gilda finds herself alone a witness to these strange happenings,  cut off from family she feels things are beyond her control and writes desperate letters to Erin.  These go unanswered yet she is made aware of his presence in many ways, possession of other people is shown, things simply turn up out of the blue.  Gilda has great trouble meeting anyone suitable and finds the wondering alone amonst others extremely trying, she sees nothing of her family and has no real friends.  She has light, meaningless affairs, one night stands that is all.  The experiments continue, a lovely tree suddenly dies without any explanation, it is hopeless trying to reach other people for they seem under some spell.  She gets notice of Erin suicide but is not convinced, the letter makes no sense and he is far from the type to suicide.  Still it seems impossible to contact him so she accepts the fact that this is what he wants, to remain a deep mystery and a memory impossible to erase.

The story opens one lovely, summer night in 1949, young people are enjoying themselves immensely, singing and acting on the stage, the audience seems equally joyous with the bright, light hearted show.  All seems well, there is no sign or suggestion of mystery nor brooding darkness in the packed audorium.  Charles sat alone, immaculate, distinctive in silence, watching closely, of course he had a purpose and his brilliant eyes glinted with some strange malicious pleasure as he savored coming events.  Pretty young Rosalind knew nothing of this, she’d been rather nervous but then her whole mind was only on words and audience. Her young lover Brent  had winked at her, all such fun.

So utterly thrilling when Charles invited Rosalind to his office, a contract signed with him, she is to go on the stage!  Charles had averted his strange, magical eyes, it seems love at first sight as she sat alone in the dimly lit, warm room heavy with romantic and magical atmosphere.  Rounding her chair three times, chanting ‘My Darling, My  Darling’ Rosalind knew nothing of magic circles.  Brent was forgotten, she waited for the charming Charles and what seems an invitation to a wonderful night of romance, as he had slipped  though a door which suddenly had appeared from no where her hopes were dashed.  She found that somehow Charles has vanished, if only she known then,, this was to be the story of her life. Always so strangely close in his odd Occult ways, leaving reminders, yet her reality was cruel, cold loneliness, treacherous lovers, violence.  Still, it had been tempered with very happy times also, a wonderful love affair in Canada, travels far and wide.  Charles was always near though in her mind,  his fascinating eyes impossible to forget, yet no love only secrets.  A bad and nasty marriage, children as distant as strangers, violence, her health had suffered badly.

Suddenly out of the blue Charles again had  entered the now ill and desperate Rosalind’s life, soon as if by magic  the miserable marriage ends.  New found freedom, so popular at the time takes her again to the mysterious Charles’ office, this appears full of mystery as Charles unveils his true purpose, his deep and closely guarded secret, Master of the Occult.  A true master as he levitates in his huge office chair, he allows other views of the Occult never before seen, some extremely terrifying.  She finds the entire building is empty, a large one of 30 floors.  Experiments followed that have no explanation, no scientist not even the great Einstein could possibly have any explanation, they were completely Super human.  Another dimension we know nothing of.  The terrified Rosalind still horribly isolated seeks help, she is badly handicapped, no one it seems knows anything really of the Occult, nor takes it with the seriousness she feels sure it deserves.  She is disgusted and disillusioned at their stupidity, she sees them as frauds making huge amounts of money when it is perfectly clear they do not take her seriously and do not seem to know what they are talking about.  Still she is aware that Charles can control and although all appears normal, she knows it impossible to be really sure.  The Occult means hidden, yet her experience must mean something to the highly intelligent, purposeful Occult, who’s physic powers are awesome, quite capable of precise predictions and without any error over endless time.  With amazing control, often violent, always dark and hidden, events simply happened, she began to hate being so alone, an outsider, what did it all mean?   Sometimes she felt she was in some momentous happening but these people were only impressed with what they considered important, being surrounded with cameras, big cars everything very flashy, noticeable.  They seemed pushy, full of self importance and no one took any notice of her, that somehow her position was meant to keep her alone, almost ignored, really treated extremely badly.  Yet for some reason this seemed the part for her so she would go unnoticed so why had he let her into his deepest, darkest secrets?  The dark secrets of the Occult, not completely of course, was it to show her why they could never be together?  It simply didn’t seem like him to take so much trouble, Charles seemed a cool, laid back man, others opinions seemed like water on a duck’s back.  He could be really terrible, rude and frightening, hardly the type to take all this trouble.  So why?  There did seem some message, something, she could not think of any reason.

Why had it happened, why was she so alone?  True he had never so much as shown an interest in sex, religion, he was a strangely silent man, handsome too in a way, not an athletic type.  So strange, he could change his appearance from just ordinary brown hair to a long flowing white, tied back in a pony tail.  Charles was always immaculate, not one hair out of place, his clothes were always perfect although he had his favorite an old black suit.  However it was his startling eyes, turning from a clear perfect blue, to terrifying black filled with hate one remembered most.  Rosalind remained a fairly simply person, alone seemingly forgotten and poor.  She had wished for happiness and love and some fun for, to her life was short, difficult.
Still the mystery is there, what did it mean?  One can only answer that by observing, perhaps learning.  For Rosalind fulfilling the great dream of her romance never happened, he had simply vanished., yet was always there.  Rosalind had often questioned Religious teachings quite openly, it had always seemed oddly biased particularly against female sex and the enjoyment possible according to the person’s libido,  if without any guilt attached. Why pray and beg for forgiveness. Sins? What sins?  Indeed she felt sinned against often enough and the sinners seemed to find it all very amusing!

At a young age she was drawn to the scientific studies of Charles Darwin who had lived in a strict Victorian Age of very strong Religious beliefs, an age of great hypocrisy and narrow views. One could well understand the brilliant mind of Darwin dissatisfied with the explanations so readily and firmly enforced in those Victorian times on life and its beginnings.  Indeed Darwin seemed to make sense although it did seem a little too simple, his studies left questions, many of them had rather questionable explanations, loose ends, proof was sought, it seemed  impossible.   Darwin’s theories could not possible answer nor explain any of her Occult experiences so she decided it must have been the times and the ignorance that surrounded him that drove Darwin on and progress was made, great progress.  Darwin’s simply explanations though lost much of  their realities and possibilities under these very trying conditions she now experienced.  The Church despite films to the contrary that had you believe they had a complete understanding and quick fix to all such problems turned out to know almost nothing and advised pray.  She patiently tried it for a while but when nothing changed she gave it up It has very definite sexual complications to it a spell and is in fact a very dangerous thing but it was no use going to the Police because they simply did not know what she was talking about and besides that she knew that Charles could and would control them.  A spell is a scientific, tangible sort of thing that almost no one knows anything about or believes in these days, perhaps it is simply the environment or something but it does not explain the many odd happenings that seemed to stalk Rosalind nor the annoying and upsetting isolation that seemed so impossibly clinging.

Perhaps if she could only meet someone new, to forget  all the past and start afresh.  So she tried that also, in fact she couldn’t think of anything else she could try, it was seriously affecting her health, what was the answer?  Should not this Occult be more clearly defined and understood, not hidden away by the Church and itself, it can be most dangerous and powerful. For this to happen because of ignorance to her when she had done nothing at all to deserve it.  A horribly lonely wasted life in mysterious circumstances that could not be explained or believed just seemed too much to bear.  Still young enough to enjoy a good sex life and social also, she was denied it because she had been mislead, he had gone and only made his presence known by odd actions that were perhaps magical and clever but were of no practical use to her. It was sheer vanity to imagine these reminders of him made her long for him or anything like that, still she supposed as her sex life and everything else had gone, this was a possibility. Was Darwin right after all? Just something that had its origins in a bit of flotsam?  Who knows?   (C)
